How Much Do Google Ads Cost, From Click to Booked Call
How much do Google Ads cost? The average Google search click cost $5.42 across industries in 2026, according to LocaliQ's 2026 search advertising benchmarks, with legal clicks at $9.87 and business services at $5.87. You set the budget, so the number to run the business on is cost per booked call, and the management fee is a separate bill on top.
Below is the math from click to booked call, what moves the price and what management adds.
- The average Google search click cost $5.42 across industries in 2026, per LocaliQ.
- In the same report, legal clicks averaged $9.87 and business services clicks $5.87.
- Cost per booked call, not cost per click, tells you whether a campaign pays.
- A few hundred clicks a month is about the minimum to learn anything from a campaign.
- Ad spend and the management fee are two separate bills, and the ad account should be in your name.
How much do Google Ads cost per click?
LocaliQ's 2026 benchmarks put the all-industry average cost per click at $5.42, with a 6.64 percent click-through rate, an 8.18 percent conversion rate and a $66.69 cost per lead. Treat those as a starting point, since your keywords and your city move the number.
By industry, Attorneys & Legal Services averages $9.87 per click and $131.63 per lead. Business Services averages $5.87 per click and $93.69 per lead. The report doesn't have an IT services row.
Cost per click, for comparison: $5.42 all industries, $5.87 business services, $9.87 legal.

Those are national averages. Your click cost depends on the keyword, the city, how many competitors are bidding and how your ad and page compare to theirs. A plumber in Jupiter and a personal injury firm in Miami are not in the same market.
How do I get from cost per click to cost per booked call?
Multiply the click cost by the number of clicks it takes to get one lead, then by the number of leads it takes to get one booked call. Here's a worked example with made-up numbers, labeled so nobody quotes them back as a benchmark.
| Step | Example number | How it compounds |
|---|---|---|
| Cost per click | $6.00 | |
| Clicks per lead (form or call) | 1 in 12 | $72 per lead |
| Leads that become a booked call | 1 in 2 | $144 per booked call |
| Booked calls that become a customer | 1 in 3 | $432 per customer |
In this example, a $6 click becomes a $432 customer. If a customer is worth $5,000 to you over a year, that's a campaign worth running. If a customer is worth $400, it isn't, and no amount of ad tweaking fixes that.
Run your own numbers through the same table before you set a budget. If you don't know your clicks per lead or leads per booked call, a tracked campaign will tell you. Our free website checkup scans your site for ad tracking, so you can see what's being measured now.

What drives Google Ads cost up or down?
Five things, in the order I'd look at them. The last one happens after the click, outside the ad account.
- Keyword intent. "Emergency plumber near me" costs more than "how to fix a dripping faucet" because the first one has a wallet behind it. You want the expensive ones, in moderation.
- Match type and negatives. Broad match without a negative keyword list buys clicks from people looking for jobs, DIY videos and your competitors' names. In my experience, phrase and exact match with a weekly negative list is where wasted spend gets cut.
- Ad and landing page quality. Google's Ad Rank help page says you can win a higher position at a lower price with highly relevant keywords and ads, and landing page quality is one of the inputs. In practice, that means one landing page per service, with the search term in the headline.
- Location and schedule. A 50-mile radius with ads running around the clock buys clicks from people you can't serve, at hours nobody answers. Target the counties you work in, during the hours the phone is staffed.
- What happens after the click. A form that goes to an inbox nobody checks can raise your cost per customer without changing your cost per click.
One note on Quality Score: Google's Quality Score help page calls it a diagnostic tool that isn't an input to the auction. Treat the 1 to 10 number as a report card.
How much should a small business budget for Google Ads?
Enough to get a few hundred clicks a month, so there's something to learn from. At a $6 click, 300 clicks is $1,800 a month in ad spend. At $10 a click, it's $3,000.
Starting smaller is fine if the keyword set is narrow and the phone gets answered. Starting bigger than you can follow up on is the mistake I see most. I'd rather a client start at $1,500 a month with call tracking and a person who picks up than at $6,000 with neither.
Law firms have higher click costs and higher case values, which I covered in Google Ads for law firms. For IT companies, a narrow set of high-intent keywords does most of the work, which is in the post on where MSP leads come from.
What does Google Ads management cost on top of ad spend?
Management is a second bill. Ad spend goes to Google, on your card, in an account you own. The management fee goes to whoever runs the campaign.
Hickey Media's monthly programs start at $1,500 a month, month to month, and ad spend is never included. The pricing page has current numbers.
Some agencies charge a percentage of spend instead, which pays them more when you spend more. I don't think that's the right incentive, so I don't price that way.
| Item | Ad spend | Management fee |
|---|---|---|
| Who gets paid | Whoever runs the campaign | |
| Whose card | Yours, on an account you own | Billed separately |
| At Hickey Media | Never included in the fee | From $1,500 a month, month to month |

Whatever the structure, the Google Ads account should be in your name, with your card on it and you as an admin from day one. If an agency says the account is theirs, the real cost of Google Ads includes everything you lose when you leave.
Why does cost per click often rise when an account gets fixed?
Because a fixed account buys better clicks. The accounts I inherit usually look the same: a reasonable cost per click, a broad match keyword list nobody has pruned, one landing page for every service and no call tracking. The owner knows what they spent and has no idea what a booked call cost.
The first month on an account like that isn't about adding budget. It's adding negatives, splitting campaigns by service, putting a tracked number on each page and listening to the calls. In my experience, cost per click often goes up a little while cost per booked call comes down, because more clicks turn into conversations.
That's why I treat a cost-per-click number without a cost-per-booked-call number next to it as a vanity metric. If your agency reports one and not the other, ask why.

- Run them through the click-to-customer table above.
- Switch to phrase and exact match, and add negative keywords every week.
- Put a tracked number on each landing page and listen to the calls.
- Confirm the account is in your name, on your card, with you as an admin.
FAQ
How much do Google Ads cost per month for a small business?
It depends on the click cost in your industry and city, but a few hundred clicks a month is about the minimum to learn anything. At the 2026 all-industry average of $5.42 per click, 300 clicks is about $1,600 in ad spend, plus management.
Is Google Ads worth it for a small business?
It's worth it when a customer is worth more than the campaign spends to get one, and when someone answers the phone. Run the click-to-customer math with your own numbers before you decide.
What is a good cost per lead on Google Ads?
LocaliQ's 2026 average is $66.69 across industries and $131.63 for legal. A good number for your business is one that leaves room for profit after the lead becomes a customer.
Does a Google Ads management fee include ad spend?
Not at Hickey Media, and I don't think it should anywhere. Ad spend goes to Google on your own card, and the fee for running the account is billed separately.
